When redesigning the seal of Columbia College Chicago, I researched other colleges' seals in addition to heraldic symbolism and meaning. The torch remained as a symbol of knowledge, as well as a guiding light. The torch sits on the horizon line and subtly represents a rising sun and the new leadership under the college's 10th president.

The rays of light emitting from the torch are representative of the creative energy at Columbia and all the vibrant work that is produced within the school. The outer circle of the seal is broken by the rays of creative energy, representing unlimited possibilities. The water that the torch is rising from indicates the school's location in Chicago and the pride for the city.
